What is a meta tag?

To understand meta tags, we must first take a look at tags.

A tag is a keyword or term assigned to a piece of information. This allows the information to be easily found by search engines. In broader terms, hashtags used in social media can also be a type of tag.

Meta tags tell search engines what your website is about. Therefore, meta tags should include pages and content that will describe the purpose of your website.
When someone enters a search query related to your website or its content on a search engine, the search engine shows the pages and content you entered for meta tags in the results.

Crawling is the process in which search engines visit web pages and collect meta tags with robots called “crawlers” to add new data to the list of known pages.

Crawlers explore new pages on a regular basis and bring data to their search engines. The search engines then re-rank and edit their search results based on the data.

There is too much data for crawlers to collect it all. Therefore, they only collect a few types of data, meta tags being one of them.

To sum up, meta tags that describe the purpose of your website are collected by crawlers → The crawlers bring the meta tags to their search engines → The search engines then use the meta tags to edit their search results.

Make sure to use meta tags that will attract users to your online store since this is the only information in the search engine results page that will help them decide whether to visit your website.

Title tag

A title tag specifies the title of a web page and it is shown in the browser’s title bar. Make sure to include the key information of your web page in the title tag as search engines use it to decide the relevance between your web page and search queries entered by users.

You can add/edit a title tag in two ways:

1. Go to My Store>Store setup>Search Engine Optimization and enter a title tag in [Title: Title].

2. Edit source code:

a. Go to My Store>Store setup>Search Engine Optimization. Select No for Enable SEO tags, and then click Save.

b. Go to Themes (PC)>My themes>Saved themes and click Edit for the page you wish to edit to open the editor window.

c. Select the page to which you want to add/edit the browser title.

d. Hover over the source code that loads the layout file of the selected page and click Open file.

    • The layout file source code starts with <!-–@layout and is usually located on the first line of the HTML text.
    • Hover over the layout file source code to find the Open file button.

e.  Use Ctrl+F to find the <title> tag.

f. Replace the text between <title> and </title> with the title you want.

g. If there is no <title> tag, insert <title> your page’s title </title> in the line after <head> XX </head>.

h. Click the Save button at the top right corner.

How to write good title tags

  • The title should be concise but descriptive of the page's content.
  • Avoid titles that are too general or too vague.
  • Include keywords that target potential customers in the title tags.
  • A title cannot exceed 60 characters.

Note

Author tag

An author tag refers to the author (either an organization or a person) of a website.
The author will be displayed whenever the link to the page is shared. This is not a required tag. Enter it if needed.

Description tag

A description tag is a piece of html code that gives a short description of a web page.
It appears right below the title tag on the search results page and helps visitors decide whether the website really contains the information they are looking for.

Make sure that your description tag is a concise summary of your page and relevant to your potential customers’ search queries.

How to write good description tags

  • Give a detailed description of the topic mentioned in the title tag.
  • Create an accurate summary of your page using keywords.
  • Have unique descriptions for every page on your site.

Include keywords that well describe the content of your website in Keywords tag.

The keywords tag appears right below the description tag on the search result page and it explains what your website is about or sells. We recommend that you use keywords used in the description tag or popular search terms in the keywords tag. Make sure to separate the keywords with commas (,).

E.g. Women's apparel, Men's apparel, Lifestyle, Street fashion
